With technology as advanced as it is today, nearly all forms of work have become more convenient, more accessible, and easier than in days past. Becoming an author is one task that has been positively affected by this advance. Before, there were a number of ways to publish and promote a print book, but it was most always expensive and involved an agent and a publishing agency.
Today, none of this is really necessary if you truly want to author a book, you just have to be willing to put in a little time and effort on promotion to make it worth your while if you’re on a budget. An E-Book is the perfect way to cheaply author a book, and makes publishing a quick, cheap and easy process. The difficulty with ebooks lies in the fact that promotion can be a bear. Without an expensive publishing agency or agent to promote for you, what’s the best way to cheaply promote your E-Book?
It’s one of the most powerful advertising tools to date, and so many people don’t take advantage of it: social media. You should absolutely have a Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter account for the sole purpose of spreading the word about your book. While you shouldn’t make your pages all about the ebook writing, you should Interact with people on a personal level, and give them a good reason to want to read your book. The majority of successful small businesses get the majority of their customers by word of mouth, many times generated by social media. Your e-book will be no different.
Look Into Search Engine Optimization
Search engine optimization is a big deal. Consider the average Joe who is looking for an educational book on dinosaurs, which happens to be what your ebook is about. He may type in google, “book about dinosaurs” or “dinosaur book for 12 year olds”. If you’ve done your search engine optimization (or SEO) research, you can count on your ebook being one of the first that he sees in the results. This may cost some money for the expertise and ranking change, but it’s well worth the cash and perhaps the best place to spend your dollars.
Face to Face Promotion
Never underestimate the power of a face to face interaction when it comes to promoting your work. Contact your local book store and request to meet with the manager about setting up a booth one weekend morning when you’ll get plenty of exposure and can facilitate great conversations with passers by about the content of your book. Offer promotional discounts only available to those who stop by and purchase the book same day. It’s an old fashioned way to spread the word, but still just as effective as it used to be.
Promoting your e-book cheaply and without using a publisher is definitely more work than paying money up front to have someone else do it, but it is doable. Put in the time for face to face promotion, social media, and search engine optimization, and you’ll see huge results in the sales of your e-book.
